Transport Solenoid Construction Readiness Review

At the heart of the Mu2e experiment is a system of three superconducting-solenoid systems: the Production Solenoid (PS), the Transport Solenoid (TS), and Detector Solenoid (DS). Pions and muons are created in the production target inside the Production Solenoid. The role of the "S shaped" Transport Solenoid is to efficiently select and focus the subsequent muons towards the muon stopping target located in the Detector Solenoid while minimizing the transmission of other particles. The TS achieves this through a series of 52 wide aperture superconducting soleniod coils (28 coil modules) with field strength between 2.5T and 2.0T that are contained in two cryostats. A prototype TS coil module has been fabricated and extensively tested in order to validate the design.

The Mu2e Project completed its preliminary design phase and achieved its DOE CD2/3b sign-off in March 2015. The DOE CD-3b sign-off grants approval for the procurement of the Transport Solenoids. The purpose of this review is to validate the technical readiness of the design and construction plan of the Transport Solenoid.
