The Mu2e Project completed its preliminary design phase and achieved its DOE CD-2/3b sign-off in March 2015. The project expects to obtain CD-3c, approval to construct the detector apparatus in early summer 2016. In preparation for this, the project has asked panels of experts, in the form of Technical Oversight Committees, to provide advice on the design, construction, and installation plans of the detector.
Critical to the experiment is the Cosmic Ray Veto, which surrounds the Detector Solenoid (DS) and half of the Transport Solenoid (TS) and is used to reject background events from cosmic rays. In order to meet the Mu2e design SES of 3E-17, the CRV must achieve a veto efficiency of 99.99% while operating in an intense radiation environment of neutrons and gammas. While the Mu2e design includes a significant amount of shielding to reduce accidentals in the CRV, this environment presents challenges to the scintillator strip based CRV design, which must produce ample light output to allow a sufficiently high threshold to be set to suppress most of the backgrounds.
The Cosmic Ray Veto system represents significant cost, schedule, and
technical challenges to the project. To help mitigate these technical risks, the CRV Technical Oversight Committee (CRVTOC)
was formed. This web page collects information useful to the committee.
