Current Status and Future Expectations
On November 21, 2008, the Fermilab directorate, acting on a
recommendation from its Physics Advisory Committee, gave the Mu2e proposal
Stage I approval,
which gives Mu2e access to resources to advance the design process to the next stage. The
collaboration and the lab have requested "Critical Design 0" (CD0)
from the United States Department of Energy, Office of Science. The
materials to support this request were submitted to the Office in
January 2009 and we currently anticipate a decision some time in the
summer of 2009.
Previous to these actions, the physics case for the Mu2e
experiment was strongly endorsed in the May 2008
report of the Particle Physics Project Prioritization Panel (P5),
charged with defining a long range plan for High Energy Physics in the
United States:
"Development of a muon-to-electron conversion experiment should be
strongly encouraged in all budget scenarios considered by the panel" [page 43].
Indeed a muon-to-electron conversion experiment was the only experiment that was recommended
by the panel in all funding scenarios.
