Current Status and Future Expectations
On November 24, 2009, the Mu2e experiment recieved "Critical Decision 0"
(CD-0), Approval of Mission Need, from the Office of Science in the US Department
of Energy. The collaboration is now taking the next steps in the design of the apparatus
and R&D on components, working towards the next Deparment of Energy milestone, CD-1, the
Approval of Preliminary Baseline Range.
The physics case for the Mu2e
experiment was strongly endorsed in the May 2008
report of the Particle Physics Project Prioritization Panel (P5),
charged with defining a long range plan for High Energy Physics in the
United States:
"Development of a muon-to-electron conversion experiment should be
strongly encouraged in all budget scenarios considered by the panel" [page 43].
Indeed a muon-to-electron conversion experiment was the only experiment that was recommended
by the panel in all funding scenarios.
